Chicken eggs, smaller than the ones we know now, were cooked in the sun to harden them into bullets that were used in slings, the kind David killed Goliath with.  This egg shape flew farther, faster, more accurately and hit harder than stones because of the aerodynamic shape.  When eggs could not be made and hardened fast enough eggs of clay were made to serve as ammunition.  History of the Sling

Chickens lay an average of an egg every day and a half; thus people have been able to accurately determine how many chickens to raise.  Generally 18 chickens will give about a dozen eggs a day.  Overages can be preserved by pickling or hard boiling or oiling.

Eggs can be preserved for several months, without refrigeration, if dipped and fully covered in heavy oil or grease.   Heated Vaseline can be used to coat the egg by dipping into the hot petroleum with a wire egg dipper such as used at Easter.  Any slightest part of the egg shell not covered with oil or grease however will cause the egg to spoil.  Oiled eggs can be used even in the tropics to keep eggs up to a year or more; clarified butter called ghee or melted lard were used by sailors of old.   Buying Country Acreage and Rural Properties
