Discussion, anyone ?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

If you click here, you will arrive at the Delaware Beach Board, where you are welcome to discuss views on current events, where to go, what to eat and where to eat it, local events, the Shorebirds or Redskins, etc. Jody and I are on the board at least a few times a day. If you post, you will get a response and a potential for a discussion.

OK, I’m bored…

Friday, July 27th, 2007

OK, so you’ve come to coastal Delaware to go on a beach vacation. Now you’re tired of the beach and of looking at all the hot girls on the beach (if you’re me, that would NEVER happen), and you want to do something else. Not to worry…there’s plenty to do in southern Delaware. But for me to partake in any of the following, it had better either be really cold or really raining.

For your consideration…

Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton – the brewery is now open and they do tours of it (including samples) Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. If I’m not mistaken, there is sampling during the tour. And then of course, you’ll have to buy some Dogfish gear (shirts, hats, etc.) and some beer to take home. For more information on the tours, call them at 302-684-1000 or visit www.dogfish.com

Dover Downs – home of two NASCAR races per year plus horse racing, casino games and fine dining (and you folks that know me know that I love to eat). For more information and a schedule of events, visit www.doverdowns.com.

Harrington Raceway and Casino, Harrington – formerly Midway Slots and Harrington Raceway, this is the site of the Delaware State Fair as well. They are still online at www.midwayslots.com.

State Parks – Sussex County is home to Cape Henlopen and Trap Pond State Parks, as well as Fenwick Island and Delaware Seashore State Parks. Camping is available in some of the parks, and others are day-use. Visit www.destateparks.com for more information and a program schedule.

Rehoboth Beach Bandstand – many nights, something is going on at the bandstand. And the bandstand is all new. Visit www.rehobothbeachbandstand.com for a schedule of events.

Dewey Beach – the PAR-TAY beach just down the road. Many of the bars and venues do have concerts throughout the summer season. Visit www.deweybeachlife.com for schedules and other events.

This is not nearly an exhaustive list…there’s plenty to do in southern Delaware. Then, of course, there’s Ocean City about a half-hour away…

Enjoy !

What’s good to eat ?

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

So, you’re in Rehoboth Beach, whether on business or on leisure. The next question is, “What’s good to eat ?” or “Where’s the fat man to tell me what’s good to eat ?” The answer to both is in this blog…I’ll answer the questions in reverse order.

First of all, the fat man is writing the blog. Always ask the fat man where the trough is (and take him with you, if you want).

Next, where IS the trough ? Or where are the GOOD troughs ?

Glad you asked…

Keep in mind, this blog is being written from a blue-collar prospective. There is plenty of fine dining in town as well that I may never find out about. For working folk like me, may I suggest…

Grotto Pizza - their slogan is “The Legendary Taste,” and for good reason. Some like the other place better for pizza (no names yet, please, but they specialize in stromboli), but this man prefers Grotto. In my opinion, it is truer to New York style than the other. Plus the garlic bread, lasagne, beach fries, and other things (even the popcorn is best in town)…definitely a must-eat. Grotto has a number of locations in Delaware - in Rehoboth, there are two on the boardwalk (open seasonally), one on the Avenue, one in Dewey, and another on Rt. 1 in Lewes (Grotto Grand Slam).

Dogfish Head - the burgers are fantastic…and they’re $6 on Mondays. Plus they’re a microbrewery (they now do the brewing in their ultra-modern facility in Milton). I know Jody suggests the Raison D’Etre. I have tasted the 90-Minute India Pale Ale (they add hops for 90 minutes). I have cooked with the IPA too…but I digress. They are on the Avenue, about 3 blocks down from the boardwalk.

Nicola’s - the stromboli place. Skip the beef, in my opinion, but get the stromboli otherwise. Nicola’s also sells take-home frozen Nicoboli’s if you really like them. I like the dining experience here…it definitely has the feel of an east-coast pizzeria. Nicola’s is on N. First St.

Crystal Restaurant - the Crystal is just outside of town on Rehoboth Avenue Extension. They are open for the best breakfast in town (skip the scrapple) and lunch. Mmm…we have to eat here at least a couple times when in town. And local-to-me soon-to-be-legend LeBron James ate here too once. If you go home hungry, it’s YOUR fault.

Big Fish Grill - located on the “forgotten mile” of Rt. 1 just outside of town, they offer what I feel is the best and freshest seafood in town. Plus they operate the Big Fish Market, where you can take some of their freshness home !

Java Beach Coffee House - at The Village of Five Points in the center of the Village, on the circle at Town Center. The best gnosh in town…plus free internet for their customers (a lifesaver for me).   Bring your laptop or use the one PC they have available.

I’m sure there are differing opinions on this, but this is mine. Guten appetit !
